By the time I got to the first "o" in "boot", I realized that I had just purged the contents /boot, rather than /tmp like I had thought.
I'll be reinstalling linux on that machine tomorrow.

i remember there being an undelete tool in linux... never used it, and not sure how well it works, but maybe give it a try?
lol, why reinstall linux or run an undelete tool over the /boot when you can also just install a new kernel, lilo script (don't know if you're a grub user or not?) and whatever else finds it's way into a man's /boot dir... As easy as eating cake?
Last time I tried those tools they didn't work. Why? Because I don't use the ubiquitous ext filesystem. I use reiserfs.
